Air-fryer sesame prawn toast
Serve these toasts with prawns as canapés at your next gathering. Arrange onto a dish and top with chopped chives and additional spring onions.
Ingredients:
- 165g pack king prawns
- 2 garlic cloves
- 2 spring onions, 1 roughly chopped, 1 finely sliced, plus extra to garnish
- 1 tsp finely grated ginger
- 1 egg white
- 2 tsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp honey
- pinch of chilli flakes (optional)
- 4 slices white bread
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds (a mix of black and white works well)
- chopped chives, chopped
Directions:
- In a food processor, pulse together the prawns, garlic, finely chopped spring onion, ginger, egg white, soy sauce, honey, and chilli flakes (if desired). Blend until smooth, transfer to a basin, and refrigerate until required.
- Preheat the air fryer to 180°C. In the meantime, spread sesame oil on one side of every piece of bread. Spoon half of the bread into the air fryer basket and cook for two to three minutes, or until golden. Continue with the remaining ones. You might be able to do this in one sitting if you have two baskets or a large air fryer.
- After taking the toasted bread out of the air fryer, divide the prawn mixture among the slices and generously distribute it with a thick coating. After evenly distributing sesame seeds over each portion, divide it into four or eight tiny triangles. Frozen uncooked toasts can be stored for up to three months in an airtight container. Cook, in batches, in a single layer for 2 to 3 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius (or 6 to 8 minutes from frozen), or until cooked through and gently brown. Place onto a serving dish and, if desired, sprinkle with additional spring onions and finely chopped chives for decoration.
TIPS:
- Utilise Fresh Ingredients: For the greatest taste and texture, use fresh bread and prawns. A delicate and sweet flavour can be obtained from fresh prawns.
- Get the Prawn Mixture ready. Okay, so: To get a creamy texture, blend or process the prawn mixture until smooth. For flavour, add ingredients such sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic.
- Slice the Bread Thinly: For the toast, use thinly sliced sandwich or white bread. It gets nice and crispy in the air fryer, with a crunchy outside.
- Carefully assemble the toasts by equally spreading a tiny amount of the prawn mixture on each piece of bread. To make sure the sesame seeds stick, press them onto the prawn mixture.
- Pre-heat the Air Fryer: Before adding the prawn toasts, preheat the air fryer. This keeps them from being soggy and aids in their even cooking.
- Arrange all of the toasts in one layer: Make sure not to overlap when placing the prawn toasts in the air fryer basket or tray, arranging them in a single layer. This facilitates even cooking by allowing hot air to flow around each component.
- If required, cook in batches: Depending on the capacity of your air fryer, you might have to cook the prawn toasts in separate batches to prevent crowding.
- Keep an eye on the cooking time: Preheat the oven to a moderate 350°F (180°C). Cook the prawn toasts for 6 to 8 minutes, turning them halfway through, or until they are crispy and golden brown.
- Serve Right Away: Serve the hot sesame prawn toasts straight out of the air fryer, topped with chopped cilantro or green onions and served with a dipping sauce such as soy sauce or sweet chilli sauce.
