Cheese stuffed tater tots

Cheese-Stuffed Tater Tots Recipe

These homemade cheese-stuffed tater tots are crispy, golden brown, and bursting with gooey melted cheese inside. They’re perfect as a party snack, appetizer, or a fun side dish. Made with shredded potatoes, seasonings, and your choice of cheese, they deliver a crunchy texture with a melty surprise in every bite.

Ingredients

2 large russet potatoes (about 1.5 lbs), peeled and shredded

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

¼ teaspoon paprika (optional)

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for a gluten-free version)

1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or pepper jack)

1 egg, beaten

1 cup panko breadcrumbs (for extra crunch)

Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Potatoes

Place the shredded potatoes in a bowl of cold water and soak for 10 minutes to remove excess starch.

Drain and squeeze out as much water as possible using a clean kitchen towel.

2. Make the Tater Mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine the potatoes, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and flour.

Mix well until evenly distributed.

3. Stuff with Cheese

Take about a tablespoon of the potato mixture and flatten it in your hand.

Place a small piece of cheese in the center and wrap the potato mixture around it, forming a small tot.

Repeat with the remaining mixture.

4. Coat and Fry

Dip each tot into the beaten egg, then roll it in panko breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.

Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).

Fry the tots in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

Remove and drain on paper towels.

5. Serve

Let cool slightly and serve with ketchup, ranch, or spicy mayo. Enjoy!

Notes & Tips

Cheese Choice: Cheddar gives a sharp flavor, mozzarella creates a gooey stretch, and pepper jack adds a spicy kick.

Baking Option: For a healthier version, bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Air Fryer: Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 12-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway.

Make Ahead: Freeze assembled tots before frying for up to 2 months. Fry directly from frozen, adding 1-2 minutes to the cook time.
