This crispy blooming onion is a show-stopping appetizer made from a whole onion cut into petals, coated in seasoned batter, and fried until golden and crunchy. Served with a creamy dipping sauce, it’s bold, indulgent, and perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

Blooming Onion

1 large sweet onion

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp paprika

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp onion powder

¼ tsp cayenne

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp black pepper

1 cup cold milk

1 large egg

Oil for deep frying

Creamy Dipping Sauce

½ cup mayonnaise

2 tbsp ketchup

1 tsp mustard

½ tsp paprika

½ tsp garlic powder

Salt to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Onion

Cut off the top of the onion, leave the root intact.

Place cut-side down and slice into 12–16 wedges, stopping before the root.

Gently separate petals.

Prepare the Batter

Mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper.

In another bowl, whisk milk and egg.

Coat the Onion

Dip onion into the flour mixture, getting between petals.

Dip into milk-egg mixture, then back into flour mixture for extra crunch.

Fry

Heat oil to 350°F (175°C).

Carefully lower onion into oil, cut-side down first.

Fry 8–10 minutes, turning once, until golden brown.

Drain & Serve

Drain on paper towels.

Serve hot with dipping sauce.
