Some advice for using an air fryer to make apple pie

Here are some pointers for using the Airfryer to make apple pie:

  • Selecting the Right Apples: Granny Smith, Fuji, or Gala apples are excellent choices for baking. They are good in pies because of their tangy, sweet flavour and sturdy texture.
  • Prepare the Dough in Advance: Let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator after preparing it beforehand. This relaxes the dough and facilitates handling.
  • Carefully roll out the dough: Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough on a surface dusted with flour. To ensure that the pie cooks evenly, try to keep the thickness uniform.
  • Use Parchment Paper: Before adding the dough, line the bottom of the Airfryer pie pan with parchment paper. This facilitates the pie’s removal from the pan after baking.
  • Avoid Too Much Liquid: Before adding the apple filling, you can lightly dust the bottom of the crust with breadcrumbs to keep the pie from getting too wet.
  • Before adding the apple filling, prick the dough by making a few holes on the bottom with a fork. This will assist in releasing steam while cooking and keep the dough from rising too much.
  • Adjust the Time and Temperature: Depending on the make and type of your air fryer, the time and temperature may change. Start at a moderate temperature (180°C, for example) and modify the duration as necessary. Periodically check the pie to make sure it’s not burning.
  • Pie Browning: If the top of your pie is not browned enough, bake it for a few more minutes after brushing a thin layer of beaten egg yolk over the pastry using a pastry brush.
  • Allow the Pie to Rest: Allow the pie to rest in the Airfryer for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes before slicing. This will facilitate cutting by stabilising the filler.
  • Change up the Flavours: You can add raisins, chopped nuts, or even a little rum or brandy to the filling for more flavour.
  • Keep in mind that depending on your Airfryer type, cooking temperatures and timings may change, so it’s a good idea to refer to the owner’s handbook for precise instructions.
