  5. With the buttered side facing up towards you, place the remaining piece of bread on top of the cheese. Using your hand or a spatula, firmly press it down. Note: The bread should end up on the outside of the sandwich on both buttered sides.
  6. After 6 minutes of air fry time, turn the tuna and continue to air fry for an additional 2 to 4 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the tuna is crispy and golden.

NOTES:

  • Prior to cooking, make sure the air fryer is preheated. This guarantees that the tuna melts through at the proper temperature in the air fryer.
  • Use premium tuna that has been brine- or water-packed.
  • To keep your tuna melt from getting soggy, thoroughly drain and press away any extra liquid.
  • Select a bread that is robust enough to support the weight of the filling, such as whole wheat, rye, or sourdough.

Variations:

  • To add more flavour to the tuna mayo mixture, chop some red onion or celery.
Replace the cheddar cheese with feta, gruyere, mozzarella, or any other meltable cheese.
  • Before air-frying, add thinly sliced tomatoes to the tuna melt.
  • For a different flavour, replace the Dijon mustard with pesto and a squeeze of lemon juice.
  • Top the melt with sliced avocado for an added nutritional boost.
  • Use just one slice of bread to create an open-faced tuna melt.

Storage:

  • Eat the tuna melt right out of the air fryer for the best results. Any leftover tuna melt can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three days in an airtight container.
  • Reheat for three to five minutes in the air fryer.
  • Freeze: This product should not be frozen.
