Old-Fashioned Buttery Yeast Rolls Recipe 

This recipe for Old Fashioned Yeast Rolls is rich, fluffy, salty, a touch sweet, and absolutely delightful. These dinner rolls are juicy thanks to the heavy cream and honey butter. I swear it’s addictive and well worth the effort.

This is one of our family’s favorite recipes. We’re not sure how old it is, but it’s probably from the Depression Era (no milk, no eggs).

Ingredients for Old-Fashioned buttery Yeast Rolls Recipe:

  • 2 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 ½ tablespoons active dry yeast
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • ¾ cup shortening
  • 7 cups all-purpose flour, divided, or more as needed
  • ½ cup butter, melted

Instructions for Old-Fashioned buttery Yeast Rolls

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Stir in the sugar and salt until froth forms.
  2. Mix in 3 cups flour and 3/4 cup shortening with the dough hook until the mixture resembles thick pancake batter.
  3. Fill a pot halfway with hot (but not boiling) water.
  4. Take out the mixer bowl and wrap it in plastic wrap and a cloth.
  5. Place the bowl over the pot of boiling water, being careful not to let the bottom touch the water.
  6. Allow to rise for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  7. Return the bowl to the stand mixer and gradually mix in the remaining 4 cups flour until the dough is smooth and elastic; you may need to do this in two batches.
  8. Shortening generously grease two 9×13-inch glass pans.
  9. Form the dough into 24 balls. Fill each prepared pan with 12 balls; cover with plastic wrap and a cloth.
  10. Allow to double in size in a warm place, about 1 hour; balls will start out about 1 1/2 inches in diameter but will rise and touch the sides of the pans.
  11. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
  12. Bake the rolls in a preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  13. Remove from the oven and brush the top with melted butter.
