Cabbage isn’t typically a vegetable that incites the most excited of reactions, but with this Southern fried cabbage recipe, it just might. Tender, buttery, and caramelized cabbage comes together with salty bacon and other veggies to create a surprisingly decadent dish, and one that pairs perfectly with other Southern classics.

INGREDIENTS For Southern Fried Cabbage Recipe
  • ½ green cabbage head
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ white onion, diced
  • ½ green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 celery stick, diced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon Creole seasoning
INSTRUCTIONS For Southern Fried Cabbage Recipe
  1. Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage.
  2. Cut out the core, then slice the cabbage thinly.
  3. Thinly slice the bacon into ½-inch pieces.
  4. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Add the bacon and garlic. Cook for 2 minutes, or until the bacon starts to render fat and garlic turns fragrant.
  6. Add the onion, bell pepper, and celery. Cook for 5 minutes.
  7. Add the cabbage, salt, pepper, and Creole seasoning. Stir, to combine.
  8. Cover and cook for 10 minutes.
  9. Remove the lid and cook for another 5 minutes.
  10. Serve while warm.
A few things to note on this recipe:

⭐This is a recipe that you can cook to suit your taste. If you like the cabbage with a little more texture, you’ll want to cook it for less time. Those of you who like it super tender will cook it more. It’s just a matter of tasting a bite or two every little bit and cooking it until you get it where you like it.

⭐While I’m always a fan of timesavers, using pre-shredded bagged cabbage (like for coleslaw) isn’t a great idea. It’ll cook to mush pretty quickly. You’ll want to get a whole head of cabbage and chop it up. It’s pretty easy to do, though.
