Crispy-Top Buttery Cake Squares
🧾 Ingredients
- 1 cup (225g) butter, melted
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the crispy topping:
- 2–3 tbsp sugar (for sprinkling on top)

1. Prepare
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F)
- Grease or line an 8×8 or 9×9 baking pan
2. Make the batter
- In a bowl, whisk together melted butter and sugar
- Add eggs and vanilla, mix well
- Stir in milk
- In another bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt
- Gradually combine dry ingredients into wet mixture until smooth
3. Bake
- Pour batter into the pan
- Sprinkle sugar evenly on top (this creates that crispy crust ✨)
- Bake for 30–40 minutes until golden on top and set in the center
4. Cool & cut
- Let it cool slightly
- Cut into squares
- Serve warm or at room temperature
🍽️ Tips
- For extra flavor, add coconut flakes or a little lemon zest
- The crispy top forms from the sugar caramelizing while baking
- Don’t overbake—keep the inside soft and buttery
