Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

🧾 Ingredients

For the patties:

  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped or grated)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the patties

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix gently (don’t overwork the meat).
  3. Shape into thick patties.

2. Cook the patties

  1. Heat a pan over medium heat with a little oil.
  2. Add patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
  3. Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).

3. Make the onion gravy

  1. In the same pan, add butter and chopped onions.
  2. Cook until soft and golden (5–7 minutes).
  3. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Stir in flour and cook for another minute.
  5. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
  6. Add Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and salt.
  7. Simmer until thickened.

4. Finish cooking

  1. Return patties to the pan.
  2. Spoon gravy over them.
  3. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and tender.
