Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
🧾 Ingredients
For the patties:
- 500g (1 lb) ground beef
- 1 small onion (finely chopped or grated)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 egg
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
For the gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter or oil
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp black pepper
- Salt to taste
👨🍳 Instructions
1. Make the patties
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently (don’t overwork the meat).
- Shape into thick patties.
2. Cook the patties
- Heat a pan over medium heat with a little oil.
- Add patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
- Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
3. Make the onion gravy
- In the same pan, add butter and chopped onions.
- Cook until soft and golden (5–7 minutes).
- Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Stir in flour and cook for another minute.
- Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and salt.
- Simmer until thickened.
4. Finish cooking
- Return patties to the pan.
- Spoon gravy over them.
- Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and tender.
