Classic Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy
Ingredients
For the steaks:
1 lb ground beef (80/20 is ideal)
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1 small onion, finely minced
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
Salt and black pepper to taste
1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for browning)
For the onion gravy:
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauc
1 tbsp ketchup (optional for a hint of sweetness)
2 tbsp flour

Instructions
1. Make the beef patties
In a large bowl, mix together:
Ground beef
Breadcrumbs
Egg
Milk
Minced onion
Worcestershire sauce
Dijon mustard (if using)
Salt and pepper
Form the mixture into 4 oval patties.
2. Brown the patties
Heat 1 tbsp oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Brown the patties on both sides (about 3–4 minutes per side).
They don’t need to cook through fully at this stage.
Remove patties from skillet and set aside.
3. Make the onion gravy
In the same skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter.
Add sliced onions and cook until softened and golden (8–10 minutes).
Sprinkle in 2 tbsp flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Slowly whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup (if using).
Bring to a simmer and season with salt and pepper
4. Simmer everything together
Return the beef patties to the skillet.
Spoon some gravy over the patties.
Cover and simmer on low for 20–25 minutes, or until patties are cooked through and the gravy thickens. Serving Suggestions
